Something Witty

She Lives!!

Fiona lives!!! And you can see it for yourselves. Her blog in all its glory!

She is currently in Vitória, and just set up the blog with the rest of the trip back-logged. Makes for some entertaining reading, even if you don't know her. Check it out.

The link is up in all of its magnificence on the sidebar; it's there to stay.

Linux

This post is for the geeky ones of you out there. (Yes I know you are, you just don't want to admit it)

I was able to get both Ubuntu, and Kubuntu set up in VMware. So am getting all 'linuxed' out for now. Heh.

On a more physical note, my toe has been doing better. I went running today, and it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would. So I'll definitely be doing more of that these next few days.

Bathroom Surgery

If I had to describe in a word today, it would be pain.

I ended up pulling out a toenail corner root today. One of the most painful ones I've had to pull. The worst thing is that they grow back!!

While it wasn't a bloody ordeal, (I've had real bloody ones) it was quite painful, nearly 5 millimeters deep. Yes toenails (mine at least) go quite deep. And after that I had to put shoes on and walk over a mile because the car went out. Bloody socks ensued.

Well enough of that now. After 2 Tylenol's I'm doing fine. Am just hoping my toe heals quick so I won't be suffering with shoes while witnessing on Wednesday.

Weekend was good. Ended up going over to the BSC to sleep, since all the kiddos would have been running around the house at around 9. Was a good choice. Slept till 11:30 or something. Showed Joe a thing or two, he showed me some of his computer wares, watched a soccer game, as well as the end of the Formula 1 race. (It had been sooooo long since I had watched any sports)

So there goes my day, and my weekend. Well, Sunday at least.

For the geeks out there, tomorrow is the official launch of Firefox 2. But if you really want to get it NOW here it is. Enjoy!

Elections

We all love elections. And this year is no different, the hundreds of pamphlets littering the city streets, the tacky banners lining every single light post, painted walls, and of course the mandatory television prime time promo's. Oh the joy!

PS. Party tommorow. Will see if I can nab some pics again. Our home's dress code is black.

A Royal Room

I have been telling everyone that I got the biggest room in the house now. The living room.

Corny joke I know. But it is true.

Am sleeping in the living room since I am in transit from one room to another. So untill the end of the week I am officially MST again. Heh. (For those of you non Brazilian, it is 'Movimento-Sem-Terra', aka. Landless or houseless movement/group)

Boring Sundays, and Corny Parties

I have a belief about Sundays. And it is that you should enjoy being bored on Sundays since I can never be bored during the week. (Too much work) And I do! Well... Somewhat.

An uneventful Sunday, and so.. On to the Corny Parties!!!

I said I would take my camera and I did manage to take some 'compromising' photos of certain individuals. *snicker* So here they go.

Our local DJ. 'DJ Petes'

The lovely Dora

The priceless Pearl (You should have seen the look on her face after I took that photo. I thought she was going to kill me)

Tim and the other Pearl, dancing the victory dance (aka. They won a prize for their clothes and cat-walk)

Birthdays

Birthdays are always fun. Especially when it is a child's birthday. That way you get all the adults to dress up like fools.

We go from this...

To this!!

Yes I do realize that our home is comprised mainly of strange people. (Myself included of course)

Tonight is 'Brega Party Night' at another home. Will take my camera and see if I can get some incriminating photos if the batteries last. (I need to get spares) I am seriously impressed with the battery life on the camera though. Every time I use the camera I am expecting the batteries to die, that was a month ago.

Servers, Sweat, and Tears

*Attention! the following reading material has been proved hazzardous to the health of non geeks. Continue reading at your own discretion*

Anyone know the feeling that you just lost 3 weeks of your life? And not just like what you did wasn't worth it, but that is was just GONE!!

Well one of the Hard Drives on our server yesterday just died. Overheating I suspect. Not that I have ever heard of a Hard Drive giving up the ghost because of exessive heat, but I do have logs to prove overheating.

So what does that mean practically? That all the work I was doing for the past 3 weeks just vanished into smoke and a smouldering piece of metal. (Well okay, it wasn't really smoking, but it was quite hot)

I think my brain went with it last night, since I came back from a day of witnessing in the late afternoon, sat at my desk and someone called out "Hey is the server working?" Since I am officially the home 'geek' obviously it was up to me to find out what was going on. The only problem was that it didn't have a monitor. I kept seeing the Hard Drive light on the server blink away. (For those of you computer illiterate, it means that it is being used. aka. busy)

After patiently waiting for 5 or 6 minutes I couldn't take it any longer and pulled someone's monitor from them.

"Hey that was my monitor!"
"That is true. It WAS your monitor!"

So I plug it in and lo and behold I am greeted with a wonderful string of messages on the screen:
Sector 2462 unreadable
Sector 2463 unreadable
Sector 2464 unreadable
Sector 2465 unreadable
Sector 2466 unreadable
Sector 2467 unreadable
Sector 2468 unreadable
Sector 2469 unreadable
Sector 2470 unreadable
Etc. Etc.

My heart went "pitter patter". No wait. That isn't the expression I am looking for...
My heart nearly stopped. (Sounds so much more dramatic doesn't it?) After resetting again and again I was finally able to get the computer turned on and working. (Somewhat) Only to be greeted with the glorious message...

Volume F: is unavailable

My heart (and any other vital organs) sank.

"Do I have a back-up??" Was the first thought that raced through my head.

To add to my stress level, I wasn't aware that there was an old back-up.

Well to make a long story short I was able to get over half of the work back since there were old copies of some of my work lying deleted on some other Hard Drives. So putting my l33t hax0rz skillz to the test, I pull out my ever handy, Easy Recovery program. (I just can't believe that I only thought of this at night lying in bed)

Thankfully I was able to recover around half of what I had lost. But the best part of it was that the parts I recovered were the most time consuming parts. (Oh the Joy!!!)

I was so happy I almost didn't mind that I had lost it in the first place.

But of course everyone in the home lost all kinds of important files, from the home schedule, to finances, to the kids school for the year.

The Lord knows. Cause I sure don't. Heh.

The Queen of Socks

Yesterday I talked to the "Queen of Socks". Her majesty Nellie. Since her departure to France, things have been... Well not stale, but suffice it to say that Pérola has had to take up the fetish for multi-colored toe socks.

But yes, I didn't only talk to Cannelle, but saw her as well, she managed to get a webcam working so I was able to inspect her red nose.

It is official!!! During the Christmas season, she will be knows as Rudolph. (Sorry Canz, I couldn't resist it. Hehehehe)

Besides her 'bad hair day' (a no school day) she looked the same. Well, including the bad hair day she looked the same. *grin*

So yes that was definately the highlight of the week! Even more than the format of my computer. (I just love a 'clean' system) Consider that a compliment Nellie. *wink*

*Geek warning*
I haven't been able to try Vista yet. Pity, all of the DVD's I burn seem to mess up somehow. Oh well. I guess when it gets officially launched then I'll have a good enough exuse to justify a couple of DVDs.
*End geek warning*

About the post Double Trouble, I wasn't refering to Nan about snobbing me. She was too tired/apathetic/languid/stoic to snob me. (Although for some people that is snobbing) But I think she still feels like a 'fish out of the water' here in SP. So I won't hold it against her. *wink*

We ended up watching The Terminal last night. Even after hearing that it was a slow movie, and that some people didn't like it, I still was interested in watching it, and I wasn't disapointed.

It is an interesting movie that doesn't quite have your typical hollywood ending or plot twists. I kept on guessing as to what would happen and was pleasantly surprised to see that it didn't happen. (eg. When he goes to get the autograph and is asked to wait, I yell out... "Watch him keel over and die in the middle of his performance." Heh)

However I kept getting George Carlin's airport terminal jokes in my head. (You know.. The narrator for Thomas the Tank Engine)

Who wants to eat at the 'Terminal Snack Bar'?

New Apparel

So I finally got a package that was sent to me via courier. You know, those a friend is going by there so send it with them and they'll send it to a friend who will later forget to give it to me. (They should really make FedEx cheaper here in Brazil!!)

So I open the bag to get my hands on all of the goodies when out comes a note. Written on a piece of paper, it was ezplaining that someone was doing a little bit of 'dejunking' and was giving some clothes away, and since no one in their home fits in them they thought of me since I was "fofinho" (eg. fluffy, stout) in her very words.

Hmpf! Well in my defence I have lost weight since she last saw me, which was over a year ago. Been running almost every day (well... somewhat, if you take out 1 month or 2) since January. But I do run. I promise!! *grin*

But I disgress..

After the letter came out some brand new fancy shoes. Well they 'might' have been used once or twice, but it smells new. Heh. They aren't dress shoes, but at least they aren't tennis shoes. So I guess I'll keep them. *snicker*

Some nice shirts were included, as well as some pants, jeans and such.

Man! If these were forsake-all, I want to see what that person has in their wardrobe!!

I showed it to some home members and they were even more excited than I was about me getting new clothes. I guess it bothers them that I only have a few changes of clothes. At least someone is excited about going out with me.

She has risen... Or left..

Yes. Fifi has left. Leaving a gaping hole in our hearts. Or at least in our office and grammar correction.

Please keep her in your prayers as she embarks on a 10 day faith-trip with her younger brother down south. Will post her new blog link as soon as she sends it to me.

Fifi's "Magnum" look, while Gabi grins

Everyone is sad that Fifi is leaving... Well, somewhat
